As readers may be aware, I'll be taking over as Chair of the ABA's Section of State and Local Government Law in a couple of months. I understand that many of my colleagues do not see the value in ABA participation, and I've explained why I do so here. It's been a wonderful way for me to meet colleagues from around the nation, develop professional skills, learn about areas of law which I should know but do not practice. In short, it's made me a better lawyer. If you aren't participating, you really should consider it.
We sent out a call for leaders this morning via email, and I'm reproducing it here for those of you who may be interested in joining our little enterprise but who didn't get the email.
Come, join us.

Volunteer! Network with colleagues! Develop professional strengths, add to your resume, and have fun! (Goal 9 of this Section is to have fun) Committees are the strength of our Section, initiating and providing CLE programming at conferences, in webinars, and through published articles stimulated by these programs.
As we approach the 2017-2018 bar year in August, we are looking for chairs and co-chairs of our Section committees. A partial list is here. Please let us know that you are interested in chairing a committee or subcommittee of the Section, or feel free to recommend someone else – whether or not yet a Section member – who you think will be a great leader. Of course you can also tell us that you would like to be a committee member or start a new committee. Or help plan our two in-person conferences.
All leaders will have an opportunity to attend a web-based training session at the end of the summer to assist with planning and organization.
Committee conference calls are held monthly. For an example, see here. There may be limited reimbursement to attend various Section meetings for some appointees. To indicate your interest, please write a brief statement and email it to any or all of the people below:Robert Thomas, Section Chair Elect, at [email protected],
Michael Kamprath, Membership Officer, at [email protected],
Tamara Edmonds-Askew, Section Director, at [email protected]
