We know we've been doing the hard sell lately, with multiple posts on the details of the upcoming 2016 Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Litigation / Condemnation 101 Conference, which runs from January 28-30, 2016, in Austin, Texas. And this will be our last pre-conference post, we promise.
But me and my co-planning chairs, Joe Waldo, Jack Sperber, and Andrew Brigham, think we're put together a very good program that covers a lot of ground, and we really want you to come. This is also the first time the conference has been to Austin, and we're in a brand new (as in just opened) hotel, so we're looking forward to this perhaps more than usual.
The full agenda is posted here, but here are highlights:
- We'll start off with a talk by Austin Mayor Steve Adler, who in his former life was an eminent domain lawyer.
- As we've noted here before, Jeff Benedict's book about the Kelo case, "Little Pink House" is being turned into a movie starring Catherine Keener (as Susette Kelo), Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Callum Keith Rennie. We'll have an inside look at the production, with a talk by the filmmaker, Ted Balaker about the movie, which has completed filming.
- I don't know about you, but I went to law school because I wasn't a numbers guy. If you are like me, you will really appreciate "Accounting Principles for Valuation Lawyers: Using the CPA to Advance Your Case, with Ivy N. Cadle, Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC, Macon, Georgia.
- I never miss a talk by colleague Mark D. Savin (Fredrikson & Byron, P.A., Minneapolis). He's scholarly, yet practical, and always grabs my attention. His talk on "Access and Visibility; How to Approach the Case for the Courtroom" will be no different.
- What to do with that remnant parcel? Paul R. Scott, Smith, Phillips, Mitchell, Scott & Nowak, LLP, Hernando, Mississippi, and J. Kevin Walsh, Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh, PLLC, Memphis, will talk about "The Uneconomic Remnant and Other Overlooked Property Interests in Condemnations."
- And, of course, our usual Saturday stalwarts: Michael M. Berger, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, Los Angeles will give his annual update on "Regulatory Takings," and James S. Burling, Director of Litigation, Pacific Legal Foundation, Sacramento, will present "Property Rights and the First Ten Years of the Roberts Court."
- Professor Ilya Somin will speak about his recently-published book in a segment entitled "The Impact of Kelo and the Limits of Eminent Domain."
- "Pipelines and Energy Corridors: Valuation Perspectives of Condemnors and Condemnees" with the lawyers on the front lines of one of the hottest topics in eminent domain law nationwide.
- Retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul H. Anderson will give us his tips in "The Art of Effective Negotiation - A Judicial View." Justice Anderson has a unique view on eminent domain, since he not only litigated cases as a lawyer and resolved them as a jurist, he was also a property owner in a condemnation action.
- We especially focused on the ethics component this year, and are looking forward to the session on "Ethics: Tips and Traps for the Eminent Domain Practitioner" at the first plenary session on the second day.
The complete agenda is posted here, and we think it has more than a few sessions that will catch your interest. Register here.
